Measure a year? How do you do that? With Seasons of Love.
As we collectively approach our annual rite of passage into the New Year, let’s ponder what magic and wonder we had this past year, and what we hope to have next year. What kind of season of love will this New Year bring? How do you measure your years? Have you thought about it? This Monday Music selection offers some advice about measures of living.
Measure a year well-lived with the simple pleasures
There are some great words of wisdom in this song. The measure of a year could be in a moment spent over coffee with a friend, who dies 6 months later. Enjoying a sunset is another fabulous way to tick off time on the planet. Having something to do that keeps you up to midnight, being that busy, that full of life and potential…midnights are another great measure of time.
There are many ways to meet the need of measuring time. This following stanza is ripe for the picking:
“In truth that she learned;
Or in times that he cried;
In the bridges he burned;
Or the way that she died!”
Happy isn’t the only way to measure your years. Truth, emotion, beginnings, endings…even a good death are fully acceptable ways to measure your time spent on the planet. Mix it up. Stay safe in this New Year, but mix it up and try seeing from new perspectives. Enjoy the music, and remember the Grounded Relating music challenge during your busy holiday season.
Full lyrics for “Seasons of Love” from the “RENT” album as posted on Metrolyrics.com:
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes,
Five hundred twenty five thousand moments so dear,
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes….
How do you measure, measure a year?
In daylight, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee;
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.
In Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes….
How do you measure a year in the life?
[CHORUS] How about Love? How about love? How about love? Measure in love, seasons of love, seasons of love.
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes,
Five hundred twenty five thousand journeys to plan!
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes….
How do you measure the life of a woman or a man?
In truth that she learned;
Or in times that he cried;
In the bridges he burned;
Or the way that she died!
It’s time now to sing out, though the story never ends!
Let’s celebrate, remember a year….in the life of friends!
(chorus)
How about Love? How about love? How about love?
Measure in love, seasons of love, seasons of love.
