Occasionally we all need inspiration. Uptown Funk’s gonna give it to you!
Here at Grounded Relating, we know that inspiration can emerge from the strangest and simplest of places, when you are open to seeing it. Take one of the newest song crazes of late: Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” lyrics from the “Uptown Special” album. The single released in November 2014, but months later, is still generating interest.
I don’t know exactly why this song garners so much attention, but I do know it does. I can see the buzz Uptown Funk is creating on the worldwide web. Personally, when I listen to the song, I find myself elevated; my mood is pumped up; and I am excited about possibilities and potentials. I also notice I have new energy to move into other things or projects.
But don’t believe me; just watch!
An archetypal sass worth imitating across generations
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and this song is being imitated. Check out this senior citizen version of “Uptown Funk” . The beat has been slowed down a bit, but I love the reminder that our Elders are not dead yet, and while their cellular processes may be slowing, that’s the only real difference between the young and the old: a slowing.
This hip, funky attitudinal song’s message is not lost across the generations. And when something is heard across the generations, doesn’t that make it archetypal or universal and something to be held with curiosity?
Here’s a video where an adult teacher used “Uptown Funk” to reach his high school student population in a connected way, using music and dance to teach and to bridge the authority teacher role and the student child role.
Broadcasting self-love and self-acceptance
So the public likes it; this song is popular. What makes it so popular? Personally, I think the song is upbeat, and yes there are sexual references which are always spicy, but there is also a form of self-love and self-acceptance in this song that is so refreshing to hear out in the mainstream, creating positive waves in popular culture.
And then there is this kid: Aidan Prince. Could the general public fascination with “Uptown Funk” be an intuitive sense or knowing of the perfection and joy, that is embodied for all to see by this perfect, in the moment flow of dance moves performed by a more-innocent-than-not eight year old child?
Seems like even the Atlanta Hawks mascot, Harry the Hawk saw the inspiration of “Uptown Funk” and used it to excite the fans at a basketball game.
This song can also be (and has been) interpreted as sexist, negative, and self-centered. The old phrase “Everything in moderation” applies I suppose.
I am choosing to experience this song as motivating and upbeat; how do you experience it? Post here to tell the world what you think about this song.
